Looking for a longer-lasting option after a successful nerve block?

Radiofrequency denervation uses controlled heat to interrupt the small nerves that carry pain signals from a joint. For people who respond, it may reduce pain for longer than an injection alone.

Radiofrequency denervation (also called radiofrequency ablation or RFA) is a day-case procedure performed under X-ray or ultrasound guidance with local anaesthetic. It targets small sensory nerves, not the nerves that control your muscles.

It is only considered if at least 50% pain relief is achieved after a diagnostic nerve block.

Your journey

What happens

1

Before

A consultation and diagnostic block, then a discussion of benefits, risks and alternatives.

2

On the day

The skin is numbed and fine needles are placed next to the target nerves using X-ray. The nerves are tested before being treated with heat. It usually takes 30–60 minutes.

3

Afterwards

The area may be sore for a week or two, before any improvement. You need someone to drive you home.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does denervation damage the joint or my muscles?

It targets small sensory nerves that carry pain from the joint, not the joint itself or the nerves that control your muscles.

Is radiofrequency denervation the same as ablation?

Yes. Radiofrequency denervation, radiofrequency ablation and RFA describe the same procedure. Pulsed radiofrequency is a related technique that uses lower temperatures.

Can it be repeated?

Yes. If it helped before and pain returns as the nerves recover, it can usually be repeated.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is welcomed but not always required. Some insurers need one, so check with your insurer if you are claiming.

Can I use my private health insurance?

Yes. Dr Salama is recognised by most major private medical insurers and is Bupa Fee Assured. Check with your insurer whether you need pre-authorisation. Self-funding patients are also welcome, and consultation fees are published on this site.

How quickly can I be seen?

Appointments are usually available within 2–5 days of getting in touch.
