Persistent low back pain holding you back?

Low back pain can make everyday movements such as putting on your shoes, sitting at work or getting a good night's sleep a struggle. If your pain has not settled after a few weeks, a specialist assessment can help find the likely source and the treatment options available to you.

Most back pain settles on its own within a few weeks with simple measures: staying active, pain relief and physiotherapy. When pain carries on for months, keeps coming back, or spreads down the leg, a specialist assessment can identify where it is coming from and which treatments are most likely to help.

We see patients at clinics across Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Stourbridge. Your first appointment focuses on finding the source of your pain, reviewing any scans you have had, and agreeing a clear plan, which may or may not include an injection.

Getting help

When to see a specialist

Consider a specialist opinion if you have:

  • Back pain lasting more than 6–12 weeks despite physiotherapy and simple pain relief
  • Sciatica or leg pain that is severe or not improving
  • Pain that is stopping you working, sleeping or doing the things you enjoy
  • You have had a scan and want an expert opinion on what it means and what can be done

Seek urgent medical help (A&E or 999) if you develop new problems controlling your bladder or bowels, numbness around the genitals or back passage, or weakness in the legs.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a scan before seeing a back pain specialist?

No. Many people are seen without a scan. If one is needed to guide treatment, Dr Salama can arrange it. If you already have an MRI, bring the report to your appointment.

Will I need an injection?

Not necessarily. Your assessment decides whether an injection is likely to help. Many people are managed with exercise, physiotherapy and medication advice alone.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is welcomed but not always required. Some insurers need one, so check with your insurer if you are claiming.

Can I use my private health insurance?

Yes. Dr Salama is recognised by most major private medical insurers and is Bupa Fee Assured. Check with your insurer whether you need pre-authorisation. Self-funding patients are also welcome, and consultation fees are published on this site.

How quickly can I be seen?

Appointments are usually available within 2–5 days of getting in touch.
