Help to move more comfortably with knee pain

Whether it is arthritis or pain that has persisted after knee surgery, knee pain can limit walking, stairs and sleep. Non-surgical treatments may help, including when surgery is not suitable or you would prefer to wait.

Knee pain is most often caused by osteoarthritis, which causes pain, morning stiffness and swelling that typically eases with gentle movement. Some people also have persistent pain after a knee replacement.

Alongside exercise and weight management, a knee joint injection can reduce pain. For longer-lasting relief, genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation targets the small nerves that carry pain from the knee. This is particularly useful when surgery is not suitable, is being delayed, or has not relieved the pain.

Getting help

When to see a specialist

Consider a specialist opinion if you have:

  • Knee pain limiting walking, stairs or sleep
  • Arthritis pain not controlled with exercise and simple pain relief
  • Surgery is not suitable, or you want to delay it
  • Pain persisting more than 3–6 months after knee replacement
Treatment

Treatment options

Exercise, weight management and physiotherapy are the foundation of treatment for knee arthritis. NICE guidance supports considering a steroid injection for short-term relief when other treatments have not helped enough, or to support an exercise programme.

Knee joint injection

Knee (genicular nerve) denervation

Heat is used to interrupt the genicular nerves carrying pain from the knee. It may reduce pain for several months in people who respond, and can be repeated.

Nerve treatments after knee replacement

Blocks, pulsed radiofrequency and denervation of nerves supplying the knee, for persistent pain after knee replacement once your surgeon has excluded problems with the implant.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does a knee steroid injection last?

It varies. For many people the benefit is short-term, lasting weeks rather than months, which is why it is usually combined with an exercise programme.

Can I have treatment if I have had a knee replacement?

Yes. Genicular nerve treatments are used for persistent pain after knee replacement, once problems with the implant have been excluded by your surgeon.

Can injections delay a knee replacement?

They may help you stay active and manage pain while you decide about surgery or if surgery is not suitable. They do not reverse arthritis.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is welcomed but not always required. Some insurers need one, so check with your insurer if you are claiming.

Can I use my private health insurance?

Yes. Dr Salama is recognised by most major private medical insurers and is Bupa Fee Assured. Check with your insurer whether you need pre-authorisation. Self-funding patients are also welcome, and consultation fees are published on this site.

How quickly can I be seen?

Appointments are usually available within 2–5 days of getting in touch.
