Help with neck stiffness, arm pain and neck-related headaches

Neck pain can turn simple things such as driving, working at a screen or turning your head into a struggle. When pain spreads into your shoulders, arm or head, a specialist assessment can help find the source and the treatment options available to you.

Neck pain is very common and usually improves within a few weeks. For some people it becomes a long-term problem, spreading into the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, down the arm or up into the head, and affecting work, sleep and concentration.

Dr Salama assesses where your neck pain is coming from (the joints, a nerve or the muscles) and offers targeted, image-guided treatments alongside advice on medication and rehabilitation, at clinics across Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Stourbridge.

Getting help

When to see a specialist

Consider a specialist opinion if you have:

  • Neck pain lasting more than 6–12 weeks despite physiotherapy and simple pain relief
  • Pain, tingling or numbness spreading down the arm
  • Ongoing pain after whiplash
  • Headaches that seem to start in the neck
  • You have had a scan and want an expert opinion on what it means and what can be done
Treatment

Treatment options

Treatment is matched to the likely source of your pain. Procedures are carried out as day cases under X-ray or ultrasound guidance.

Greater occipital nerve block

An injection at the back of the head for headaches that start in the upper neck.

Trigger point injections

Injections into tight, tender muscles in the neck and upper back where these contribute to the pain.

Are neck injections safe?

Neck injections are performed under X-ray or ultrasound guidance to help place the needle correctly and avoid important structures.

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Yes. The upper neck joints and the occipital nerves can cause headaches felt at the back of the head. Targeted nerve blocks may help some people.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is welcomed but not always required. Some insurers need one, so check with your insurer if you are claiming.

Can I use my private health insurance?

Yes. Dr Salama is recognised by most major private medical insurers and is Bupa Fee Assured. Check with your insurer whether you need pre-authorisation. Self-funding patients are also welcome, and consultation fees are published on this site.
